On the back of orders from the Madras High Court ordering closure of dyeing and bleaching units in the Tirupur cluster, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has started cracking the whip on units in the adjoining districts.
There are many authorized and unauthorized dyeing and bleaching units in the districts of Salem, Erode, Namakkal and Karur and as per reports, a few of the units in the Tirupur cluster have started operations in these districts.
The district authorities have started the task of identifying polluting units and have started sealing them. In Erode alone, which has around 600 dyeing units, 32 units were sealed on April 22.
It may be recalled that, on a representation from a farmer's body, the Madras High Court ordered sealing of over 700 dyeing and bleaching units in the Tirupur cluster. The farmers had complained about pollution of river Nayyal flowing through the district.
