A political outfit from Andhra Pradesh has forewarned of launching a region-wide protest, if the State government consented to raise Bt cotton seed prices.
The party has urged the government to not to pay a heed to Bt seed producing firm's demand to raise seed prices, as this would cause the Telangana farmers to face severe difficulties.
Telangana each year requires around five million Bt cotton seed packets, and if the prices are hiked to Rs. 1,050 per packet, in keeping with the demand of the seed producing firms, it would result in an extra burden of around Rs. 1.8 billion.
Meanwhile, the state which each year requires around eight million packets of these seeds would have to bear an additional burden of three billion rupees, the party revealed.
