Goan handicraft exports to receive boost

Sameer Salgaoncar, an industrialist and Head of Goa Handicrafts Rural Small-Scale Industries Association Ltd. (GHRSSIDC) said that, GHRSSIDC is prepared to initiate efforts to considerably boost handicraft exports from Goa.

This move, he said has been initiated with a intention of promoting domestic handicrafts and craftsmen. This, he added, would also help in generation of new employment opportunities in the conventional industry and conservation of Goan culture.

Further, he accepted that, in spite of the fact that, they have been floating several schemes and providing incentives to motivate craftsmen of the state, a status quo kind of a situation prevailed as far as the performance of conventional craftsmen with regard to various crafts and skills was concerned.

GHRSSIDC has accumulated details of around 1,200 local artisans to form a directory, and efforts are being made to link these artisans online to help them with promotion of their skills and products, and to explore marketing opportunities in local as well as global markets.

The recent initiatives of the Corporation includes, efforts to set up handicraft hubs, export cells, while a scheme to provide self-help groups and artisans with better tools is also underway.

Salgaoncar even talked about their intentions to develop an export market. Further he revealed that, through its participation in international exhibitions at Birmingham and Munich, the Corporation received several inquiries and has shipped handicrafts worth around Rs. 600,000 to the US, Netherlands and Switzerland.

He said that, once the state government approves their recruitment rules, they would establish an export cell to help the artisans, local handicraft exporters and other concerned parties. Also, he said that they are quite close to finalizing a scheme to boost exports.

Managing Director of GHRSSIDC, Nikhil Desai said that, GHRSSIDC's Board of Directors have recently decided to join forces with Ahmedabad's National Institute of Design, one of the world's premier designing institute with world class reputation, for designing and developing a number of specialized equipments for Goan artisans.

Through this association Salgaoncar said, the Corporation means to boost earnings of these artisans through simplification of the current procedures and help boost productivity.

He stated that the Corporation proposed to team up with the National Jute Board for generation of employment in the state, by way of imparting training to the people in production of diversified jute goods.

He also revealed that, during May and June a buyer-seller meet would be organized for Goan artisans in Pune and Hyderabad, respectively.
