India's increased coir shipments to China have helped it to surpass its fiscal 2010-11 target of Rs. 8 billion. The year saw increase in exports to China, especially of coir fibre which is used for industrial purpose.

The country exported coir worth Rs. 8.07 billion during 2010-11, a little higher than Rs. 8.04 billion achieved in 2009-10.

Coir exports have exceeded the target for the second consecutive year as the target set for 2009-10 at Rs. 7 billion, too was achieved.

In 2010-11, the dip in the exports to the US, India's biggest market for coir, was offset by increased shipments to China. However, the US still remains the biggest market for Indian coir as it accounts for about one-fifth of the total coir export.

India is one of the major coir producers in the world and its coir is exported to over 100 countries. Along with Sri Lanka, it accounts for around 90 percent of the total global coir production estimated to be around 350,000 tonnes.
