With an aim to improve the visibility of the handloom and handicraft items, the Textiles Ministry will request the Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata to allot space for these products in his retail chain outlets.

Textiles Ministry will request Ratan Tata to allocate four shelves in each of his Westside Stores for handloom and handicraft items.

Tata Group has around 50 Westside departmental outlets pan-India.

The Central Cottage Industries Corporation of India too backed this idea and said that it could help them take the handicraft products to upmarket customers across India.

It added, if this can be made possible, the hand weavers would get additional space to promote their products at Westside outlets, which are spread all across the country.

In spite of the fact that India's handicraft exports is over US$ 2.3 billion, there is a need to improve its visibility in domestic organised market.

Every year the Ministry of Textiles supports around 1,700 handloom and handicraft sector events for sale and exhibition of these items. This includes events, both within the country and abroad.
