Tajikistan to be hit by falling global cotton prices

Cotton-dependent economies of central Asian countries will face tough times, on back of raw cotton prices plunging by 30 percent in the last three fortnights.

Countries like Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are major growers of cotton and a further fall in prices could create a definite impact, says an expert.

These two countries generate a substantial amount of revenue from exports of cotton. A further fall in prices could hit revenues.

He requested the government of Tajikistan in particular, to take care to see that its cotton exporting companies are not hit by the fall in prices.

He suggested that the country should try to process as much cotton in the country itself and add-value before exporting the same.

He said that Tajikistan spinning mills currently have the capacity to process around 100,000 tons of cotton per year.
