The Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH) has unanimously elected Mr. Arvind Vadra as new Chairman and Mr. K.L. Ramesh as Vice Chairman in its meeting of Committee of Administration (CoA) held on May 28, 2011.

Mr. Vadra, of Leeza International, Moradabad, is a leading exporter of handicrafts and deals in metal crafts and has been associated with the industry for more than two decades. He also served the industry at different trade forums and association.

Mr. Raj Kumar Malhotra, outgoing Chairman of EPCH, informed that the exports of handicrafts from Moradabad is quite considerable and needs a quantum jump and, therefore, the election of Mr. Vadra to the post of Chairman of the Council will bring Moradabad handicrafts into the focus which has a vast potential.

Mr. Vadra said that in order to sustain the growth the international marketing initiatives, cluster development projects and new policy initiatives are needed to be pursued more vigorously.

New Chairman further stressed that design, product and skill development will be the core areas of his concentration during 2011-12 and expressed hope that the target set by the Government for US $2700 million for 2011-12 against the achievement of $2300 million during 2010-11 will be achieved.

Mr. Ramesh of Sri Vijaylakshmi Agarbathi Works, Bangalore, replaced Mr. Anoop Shankhdhar. He has also served as President of All India Agarbathi Association and Regional Convenor of Southern Region of EPCH.

In the year 2010-11, exports of handicrafts have registered a growth of 20.82% (in Rupee terms) over the same period last year. In 2010-11 handicrafts exports reached the level of Rs. 10,534 crore (US$2301 million) in comparison to Rs. 8710 crore ($ 1830 million) in 2009-10.

The handicrafts trade would look upto its newly elected leaders to take the reins and show direction for sustainable growth.
