Japanese embassy in Kathmandu has stated that on request from the Nepalese Government, Japan has sanctioned utilization of NPR 6 million worth of Counterpart Fund for execution of the Sericulture Development Programme, a programme aimed at developing commercial sericulture in Nepal.

The amount would be used for diversifying and commercializing the agriculture to increase production and productivity of silk cocoon and to set up more lucrative industries in the rural regions, the embassy said.

The project would support farm management, production of silk worm eggs and procurement and promotion of cocoons produced by the farmers, the embassy stated. It also revealed that the programme would benefit families of around 1,000 farmers.

The Japanese Government has provided financial assistance for constituting the Counterpart Fund in order to boost the agricultural output under KR2, the grant to provide help to the underprivileged farmers.
