Argand Energy Solutions of Charlotte announced that they have been awarded a contract for the installation of a 500 kilowatt solar energy system for Glen Raven, Inc. atop its Norlina plant, which manufactures yarns for Sunbrella performance fabrics. The solar array will be the largest under Progress Energy's SunSense Commercial PV (photovoltaic) program, generating electric power roughly equivalent to the annual electricity usage of 47 typical homes.

The $3 million project includes replacing the plant's 175,000-square-foot roof with a highly-reflective white roof that will not only enhance the performance of the solar modules, but will also improve cooling inside the plant. Completion of the solar installation is anticipated this fall.

“This project demonstrates how a well-designed environmental program can have multiple benefits,” said Leib Oehmig, president of Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, the Glen Raven subsidiary that operates the plant and manufactures and markets Sunbrella® fabrics for awning, furniture and marine applications. “When this project is completed, our plant will have an energy-efficient roof hosting a solar system that will also serve as a long-term provider of renewable electricity to Progress Energy and its customers.”

Argand Energy President, Erik Lensch commented, “We are proud to be working with North Carolina clean energy leaders like Glen Raven and Progress Energy to design and install this large solar system which will create jobs and contribute to energy independence for our state.”

This project was made possible by Progress Energy's SunSense Commercial Solar PV program, designed to encourage the development of renewable energy by offering a premium price for solar power developed on commercial rooftops. At 500 kilowatts (kW), the Glen Raven Norlina array will be the largest array under this program.

Celebrating 50 years of innovation in 2011, the Sunbrella brand revolutionized the way the world thinks of beautiful performance fabrics with its entrance to the marketplace in 1961. Today, durable, easy-care Sunbrella fabrics are available in thousands of sophisticated styles, patterns and colors for wherever people live, work and play.

Glen Raven, Inc. is global company focused on performance fabrics and supply chain management. With more than 2,000 associates around the world, Glen Raven sells products into more than 100 countries. The company's leading brand is Sunbrella performance fabrics for awning, marine and furniture. Glen Raven is also a leader in fabrics for automotive, Personal Protective Equipment, military, geo-synthetics, mine safety, flags and banners and sailcloth.
