China's cotton imports continued to decline in the past two months. Cotton imports registered 145,000 tons in May 2011, 66,000 tons less than in April, or a decline of 31.3 percent, and also down 27 percent compared with same period last year.
Average import prices continued to rise and for the first time surpassed US $3200 / ton to reach US $ 3,201 / ton, an increase of US $35 compared with April, or up 1.1 percent.
Among China's cotton imports, U.S cotton accounted for over 70 percent, imports from Africa touched nearly 20 percent, while imports from India accounted for only one percent.
China's total cotton imports reached 1.21 million tons in the first five months of this year, down 11.8 percent year on year.
China's total cotton imports reached 2.09 million tons in the first 9 months of the cotton year 2010-11, an increase of 9.1 percent year on year.
Editorial note – The cotton export cap of 5.5 million tons imposed by the Indian government has worked in favour of US cotton exporters. For a few months last year, China's cotton imports from India had surpassed those from the US.
