A sharp rise in prices of yarn has led to a significant rise in the prices of all varieties of fabrics in Bangladesh.
Over the last two months, per yard prices of fabrics have significantly gone up by Tk 10-15, which, in turn, have caused a rise in prices of all sorts of garments.
A three-piece garment which was being sold for Tk 750 two months back is now being offered at Tk 850.
The wholesale price of Pakija voile which stood at Tk 55 per yard two months back has registered a rise of Tk10 per yard. Similarly, its retail price has also gone up to Tk 70-75 per yard from Tk 60-65 per yard.
The price of Madina voile has also shot up from earlier Tk 50 per yard to Tk 60-65 per yard.
It is being felt that fabric prices may even rise further on the eve of Eid.
The fabric retailers allege that though the yarn prices have now eased slightly, they are not being able to procure goods at reduced prices.
The yarn prices in Bangladesh have soared by almost 70 percent over last one year.
Editorial note-It is but natural that prices of fabrics, and subsequently that of garments, rise when the prices of yarn increase. However, the same prices should come down, when the prices of yarn reduce, which is not often the case.
