Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari recently assured the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers (NUGTW) of more jobs, which is now a priority for his government. The representatives, led by the union president John Adaji, met the president in Abuja. The closure of textile factories, especially in the north, gave rise to crimes, Buhari said.

Many jobs would be created when the military, police, paramilitary organisations, including the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), patronise local industries, Buhari said.

The textile and garment sector has the potential to create millions of jobs, Nigerian media reports quoted a statement by special adviser on media and publicity Femi Adesina as saying. (DS)
