Pakistan's textile exports increase 2.78% in July 2017

The value of textile and garment exports from Pakistan increased by 2.78 per cent year-on-year in dollar terms in July 2017, according to data from Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. During the first month of fiscal 2017-18, Pakistan earned $1.006 billion from textile and apparel exports compared to $979.414 million in the same period of 2016-17.

Category-wise, knitwear exports showed a decrease of 5.80 per cent year-on-year to $193.749 million during the month, while exports of non-knit readymade garments were up by 20.47 per cent to $212.521 million.

Among textiles, raw cotton exports fetched $0.986 million during the month under review, showing a sharp drop of 69.88 per cent compared to exports of $3.274 million during the same month of the previous fiscal. On the other hand, cotton yarn exports rose 6.30 per cent to $109.025 million, as against exports of $102.565 million made during July 2016.

Exports of cotton fabric dropped 7.72 per cent to $160.228 million during the month, while bedwear exports increase by 0.57 per cent to $170.443 million, the data showed.

On the import side, synthetic fibre imports were up 17.79 per cent year-on-year to $50.908 million, whereas imports of synthetic and artificial silk increased 15.85 per cent to $58.715 million.

Meanwhile, the value of textile machinery imports by Pakistan dropped 8.06 per cent year-on-year to $41.091 million during the same month, which shows a decline in confidence among the country’s textile entrepreneurs.

In fiscal 2016-17 that ended on June 30, the value of textile and garment exports made by Pakistan increased by 0.04 per cent to $12.452 billion compared to exports valued at $12.447 billion in 2015-16. (RKS)
