Textile products worth US$ 90 million are being exported by Pakistan to Japan, but the exports concentrate mainly on raw materials like cotton yarn, said Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) director general for Lahore city, Sher Afghan Khan, during a recent workshop on ‘How to access Japanese market’ held in the city.

At the workshop, organized by TDAP in collaboration with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Mr. Khan informed that the TDAP is putting all efforts to develop the export potential of new as well as traditional Pakistani products to increase their market share in foreign markets.

SM Muneer, chief executive of TDAP, said that Pakistan and Japan have always enjoyed a friendly relationship, mainly centered on economic cooperation, throughout the last 60 years and the TDAP was making concerted efforts for greater cooperation with Japan in terms of trade and investment.

The initiative to host the workshop was undertaken with the aim of promoting exports of ‘made-in-Pakistan’ products, especially textiles, to the Japanese market, by providing entrepreneurs in the country a better understanding of the Japanese market, he added.

At the workshop, Japan Textile Import Association (JTIA) senior researcher Yoshiaki Kamiyama highlighted the market potential of Japan and explained options available for the Pakistani textile industry to penetrate the Japanese market.

Pakistani textile sector can penetrate Japanese market and could capture huge business consignments if entrepreneurs operating in the sector can meet the quality, design and other pre-requisites of Japanese markets, he added.

The day-long workshop was organized by TDAP and JICA with the objective of creating awareness among Pakistani exporters regarding the market requirements in Japan, as well as promoting exports of ‘made-in-Pakistan’ products to the country.

More than 75 leading textile industry representatives and entrepreneurs participated in the workshop with the aim of entering the Japanese market.
