Pakistan govt to facilitate textile sector

The Ministry of Textile Industry, Government of Pakistan, will facilitate the development of the textile sector in the country, Federal Minister for Textile Industry Abbas Khan Afridi said in a meeting to review the performance of the textile industry, earlier this month.

The meeting discussed issues pertaining to declining textile exports, upcoming textile policy, Generalised System of Preferences by European Union to Pakistan, seed amendment act, cotton standardisation, textile cess, Export Development Fund, sales tax refunds and deferred payments in detail.

Representatives of various associations, who attended the meeting, apprised the Minister of their grievances in general and pending sales tax refund issue in particular. They were assured of complete cooperation and support from the Ministry of Textile Industry.

The meeting was informed that the new textile policy would be presented in the next Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting and restructuring of the Pakistan Central Cotton Committee (PCCC) would also be an important part of their agenda.

The Federal Minister assured the delegates of smooth gas supply to the textile units of Punjab in winter to avoid any further loss to the textile industry and resolution of all pending sales tax refund on priority basis.

Members of All Pakistan Textile Mills Association, Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association, Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association, Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association, PCCC, National Food Security and Research, National Textile University and Textile Commissioner attended the meeting.

The members of the meeting recommended the inclusion of Pakistan Textile Exporters Association, Towel Manufacturer Association, All Pakistan Bed sheets and Uphoisery Manufacturer Association, All Pakistan Denim Manufacturers and Exporters Association, Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers & Exporters Association, and Pakistan Bedwear Exporters Association in the Federal Textile Board.

Later on, the Federal Minister along with the businessmen also held a meeting with the Finance Minister. The Finance Minister was apprised of the current issues faced by the textile industry. The Finance Minister assured that he would attend to the issues faced by the industry. (GK)
