 The cotton crop in Pakistan has been harvested earlier than usual, which has led to an increase in arrivals at the ginneries. Against just 1.55 million bales which had arrived till October 15, 2008, this year has seen more than a quadruple jump to 5.4 million bales till the same period.
Speaking to Fibre2fashion, Mr Rana Abdul Sattar, Chairman of the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) said that, “Sindh region accounted for approximately 2.4 million bales and Punjab around 2.5 million bales, with rest coming from other regions”.
He off course added by saying that, But from now onwards till November 30 the arrivals will slow down as this year the harvesting of the cotton crop was done much earlier as the cotton boll matured earlier than usual”.
This year’s crop is once again going to fall short of the government targeted figures and with raw cotton exports shooting up, there is apprehension among the spinning sector, that they will have to import cotton of around US $600 million to cover up the shortage.
