Cotton farmers in Punjab have rejected a Rs 640 crore compensation announced by state government for those growers whose crop was damaged by whitefly pest attack, saying it was ‘meagre’.

Bhartiya Kisan Union Ekta (Ugrahan) in Moga said the estimated loss of cotton growers is about Rs 4,200 crore and farmers would not accept the government’s ‘meagre’ relief and would continue their protests against the government in all the districts of the state by staging sit-ins in front of district administrative offices.

They have also criticized the revenue department’s survey of the crop damage and described it as an eyewash. The whitefly pest attack destroyed cotton crop in over 8 lakh acres of land across 9 districts in the state. (SH)
