SDC EC organises Young Talent Search

The Society of Dyers and Colourists Education Charity (SDC EC) recently organised its 6th National Students Competition 2016 – Young Talent Search at the Textiles Committee's office in Mumbai.
 
The theme for this year's competition was 'Advances in Colouration', and it attracted participation from various Indian colleges in both categories -- Colouration Technology and Fashion. Based on presentation of shortlisted papers, three winners were declared in each category.
 
In Colouration Technology, Prasun Mathur, M. Tech student of Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Mumbai, was declared the winner for his project on 'Development of Hygienic Cotton Using Onion Peels'.
 
Chemicals cause significant environmental degradation and harm to community if not handled properly. Increasing interest in sustainable fashion has reawakened the art of natural herbal materials,” said Prasun, who is being mentored by Prof. (Dr.) MD Teli.
 
'Low-Temperature Ultrasonic Dyeing of Silk', presented by Namrata D Phulaware and Archana Bansode, also M.Tech students from ICT, bagged 1st runner up position. “The technique of ultrasound dyeing can be effectively implemented in the textile wet processing units for conservation of energy and time with improved dyeing performance,” say these students who are being mentored by Prof. (Dr.) SR Shukla.
 
Gowtham S, who is pursuing B. Tech from Kumarguru College of Technology, was the 2nd runner up. He spoke on 'Dry Dye Process- A New Development in Dyeing'. His presentation included vivid details on waterless dyeing process.
 
The Colouration Technology jury comprised AV Shankar from Britacel Silicones, textile consultant Dr. Nilesh Kanoongo, and Saurabh Gupta of AEON Commercials.
 
In Fashion & Design category, Juhi Agarwal of SNDT Women's University, Mumbai was adjudged the winner for her paper on 'Sustainable Development of Hibiscus Sabdariffa- Indigenous Practices'. The objective of her study was to investigate the effect of anaerobic microbial retting and water retting on the fibre yield, strength, fineness, colour and lustre, density and defects of mesta fibre (Hibiscus Sabdariffa).  She is being guided by Dr. Ela Dedhia.
