Rwanda : Local production of silkworm eggs, necessity
January 5, 2008

Rwanda is targeting a production of 700 million silkworm eggs by the end of this year to provide ample supply to all its associates in the industry around the world.

The silkworm egg production will occupy nearly 25 hectares at Nyandungu site in Kigali where a total of 300,000 mulberry cuttings have already been planted. These cuttings were actually imported from Uganda.

For its future projects, the Government has planned to acquire 600,000 hectares of mulberry plants in the coming three years time. Huge imports of silkworm eggs from South Korea and India is proving to be unaffordable. Local production of eggs has therefore become imperative to boost expansion plans.

A major problem in the industry is marketing, since silk production in private sector is still moving sluggishly. Government on its part has disbursed about Frw154 million for training 60 people in production and sericulture activities like farming, silkworm rearing and weaving.
