In a major Cabinet reshuffle, the 26-month-old Narendra Modi government has appointed television actor turned politician Smriti Zubin Irani as the new Cabinet minister of textiles, while Ajay Tamta has been appointed minister of state for textiles (MoS).

Irani will shift from the ministry of human resources and development (HRD) to textiles.

Irani began her political career by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2003. She is currently member of Rajya Sabha from Gujarat.

Ajay Tamta is a first-time member of Lok Sabha from Almora (SC), Uttarakhand. He has been twice member of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly during 2007-12 and 2012-14. He has served as minister of state in Uttarakhand government during 2007-08 and as cabinet minister during 2008-09.

Santosh Kumar Gangwar, who was heading the textiles ministry for the past two years, will now move to ministry of finance. (RKS)
