Narsing Girji Mill’s 27 acres of land has been identified as the place to set up the garment park, said Deshmukh while addressing the audience at the inauguration ceremony of the first global uniform and garment manufacturer’s fair in Solapur.
The garment park’s bhoomi pujan ceremony will be held on January 26, added Deshmukh. The park will provide employment to over 60,000 bidi workers, apart from multiple other unemployed people.
Solapur has over 1,000 manufacturing units that employ over 60,000 skilled workers and contributes close to Rs 1,100 crore to the Rs 18,000 crore uniform industry of India.
The minister also said that the city in the state of Maharashtra is all set to become a textiles hub for armed forces and police uniforms.
More than 6,000 retailers are expected to attend the fair organised by the Shri Solapur Readymade Kapad Utpadak Sangh in association with the textile ministry of Maharashtra and Mafatlal Fabrics. About 82 stalls displaying latest designs in garments and uniforms have been set up at the trade event.
Spot loans of up to Rs 10 million will be sanctioned for the local garment industry by the Bank of Maharashtra during the three-day fair, said Ravindra Marathe, chairman and managing director of the bank.
Solapur has more than 1,200 garment manufacturing factories. There are a number of medium and small scale industries in the district and the textile sector is an important aspect of the economy. During the last decade, Solapur has witnessed major revamp with the growth of garments manufacturing sector.
The industry in Solapur already caters to the requirements of many institutions located in India and has direct garment export houses as well. It manufactures uniform wear, mens wear and kids wear, and offers good quality products at competitive prices. (KD)
