Surat, a city well known for its textile business, showed it also cares for ‘wildlife conservation’ and ‘environment protection’. Hearts@work Foundation, an initiative of Zenitex, run under the leadership of the company’s CEO Viral Desai, marked World Wildlife Day 2018 on March 3 at Dr Shyam Prasad Mukerji Surat Municipal Zoo at Sarthana.

The awareness drive was organised by Hearts@work in association with VR Popawala Children’s Home (Orphanage) and Surat Municipal Corporation.

Desai shared the importance of ‘wildlife conservation and its effect on our environment’ with the children from the orphanage and other government schools who participated in the drive.

The motive of the drive was to create awareness amongst the people about ‘wildlife conservation’ and ‘environment protection’, issues that are an integral part of our eco-system, according to Desai.

He said that he will ensure that the issue of adoption of endangered species and other animals in the zoo will reach the people who are active in the field and who can afford the same.

Luxury car maker Mercedes Benz was also a part of the drive with its dealer ‘Benchmark Mercedes’ participating with two of their latest SUVs along with their Assistant General Manger-Sales Divyesh Tagariwala to support the ‘Wildlife conservation’ and ‘Environment Protection’ drives, which are the basic pillars of Mercedes Benz philosophy.

“The students and other visitors were encouraged to pledge and to stop using merchandises made from animal skins and parts. An awareness campaign by Hearts@work Foundation will be done for the same within the fashion industry to inspire them to give their contribution to save our rich wildlife heritage,” said Desai.

Dr Prafful Mehta, superintendent of the zoo, applauded the efforts of Desai and his NGO and assured his support to all such initiatives in the future.

Also, looking at the good care taken and the good condition of the 2,000 trees planted by Hearts@work at the Zoo last year, under its ‘Clean India – Green India’ tree plantation campaign, Hearts@work pledged to plant another 1,000 trees in near future. (RKS)
