A knowledge network management system (KNMS), an inter-ministerial synergy group on man-made fibre (MMF) and a new task force on textiles are the three institutional mechanisms initiated by the Indian ministry of textiles for efforts involving multiple stakeholders following deliberations at the three-day Textiles India 2017 summit held in Gujarat recently.

The summit, held at Gandhinagar from June 30 to July 2, hosted 26 roundtables to discuss growth opportunities for the sector.

The institutional mechanisms have been set up to synergise efforts involving the textile ministry, other ministries and state governments for achieving full potential of production, exports and employment, according to a recent press release from the ministry.

A steering committee has been set up to oversee implementation of the KNMS to facilitate exchange of knowledge amongst academia, the farming community and the industry on the productivity of natural fibres and diversification of their bye-products. Fibres include jute, silk, wool and cotton.

The synergy group will formulate policy interventions to enhance growth and competitiveness of the MMF industry in India.

The new task force, chaired by the textiles secretary and comprising representatives from the departments of industrial policy and promotion, consumer affairs, and heavy industry, various states, export promotion councils, and textile and consumer associations, has been set up to steer follow-up action on various outcomes of the 2017 summit.
