Trump open to pushing off Mar 1 deadline for China talks

Expressing optimism over the ongoing ‘complex’ trade talks with China, US President Donald Trump recently suggested he was open to pushing off the deadline of March 1 to complete the negotiations. “I can’t tell you exactly about timing, but the date is not a magical date. A lot of things can happen,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Tariffs on $200 billion worth Chinese imports will rise to 25 per cent from 10 per cent on that date if the two sides do not settle their dispute.

The real question would be whether the United States would raise the tariffs as planned, global news wires quoted Trump as saying.

Both the nations launched a new round of talks in Washington on February 19, with follow-up sessions later in the week, after a week of talks in Beijing that ended last week without a deal but reportedly yielded progress on some key issues. (DS)
