Mukesh Ambani elected as NAE member

Reliance Industries Chairman and Managing Director, Mukesh Ambani has been elected as Member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in the US, "for engineering and business leadership in oil refineries, petrochemical products, and related industries," the NAE said in a press release.
Ambani was among 80 new members and 22 foreign members whose names were announced by NAE President C.D. (Dan) Mote Jr. on Monday. This brings the total U.S. membership to 2,275 and the number of foreign members to 232.
Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature" and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education," the release said.
Individuals in the newly elected class will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE's Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. on October 9, 2016.
The election process includes a nomination with a proposer and seconder that has to be filed, and based on that the existing members vote
Mukesh Ambani has been elected the very first time he was nominated. The proposer was Dr. Raghunath Mashelkar.
Dr. Sam Pitroda has also been elected this year.
Only 10 Indian citizens have been elected to the NAE so far. Among them are Ratan Tata (2013) and Narayana Murthy (2010). (SH)
