US textile & apparel imports fall 6.50% in Jan-Oct '16

The import of textiles and apparel by United States dropped 6.50 per cent in the first ten months of 2016 to $89.332 billion, compared to imports valued at $95.541 billion in the corresponding period of last year, according to the Major Shippers Report, released by the US department of commerce.
 
The US imported $33.098 billion worth of textiles and garments from China, which accounted for 37.11 per cent share of all textile and garment imports made by the US in January-October 2016, the data showed.
 
Vietnam, India, Bangladesh and Indonesia were the next four top suppliers of textiles and garments to the US, with goods valued at $9.685 billion, $6.155 billion, $4.744 billion and $4.215 billion, respectively, during the ten-month period.
 
Segment-wise, the US apparel imports during January-October 2016 were valued at $68.991 billion, whereas non-apparel imports accounted for $20.341 billion.
 
Among the top ten apparel suppliers to the US, only Vietnam was able to increase its exports by 2.12 per cent year-on-year. On the other hand, imports from Cambodia declined by 13.61 per cent, whereas China and Mexico saw their exports drop by 8.34 per cent and 6.73 per cent respectively, over the corresponding period of 2015.
 
In the non-apparel category, among the top ten suppliers, only Turkey registered a positive growth of 5.73 per cent year-on-year. While imports from Vietnam, China and Taiwan dropped by 25.89 per cent, 16.61 per cent and 11.87 per cent to $720.157 million, $9.054 billion and $394.820 million, respectively.
 
Of the total US textile and apparel imports of $89.332 billion during January-October 2016, cotton products were worth $39.445 billion, while man-made fibre products accounted for $44.483 billion, followed by $3.847 billion of wool products and $1.556 billion of products from silk and vegetable fibres.
 
In 2015, the US textile and apparel imports increased by 4.15 per cent year-on-year to $111.928 billion, with apparel alone accounting for $85.164 billion. (RKS)
