Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEPC) intends to target 500 powerloom units in the Northeast India, according to North East Co-ordinator of PDEPC, Ranjima Baruah.

While speaking at a one-day powerloom weaving awareness programme held at Sericulture Department at Sangaipat in Manipur, Mr. Baruah said that there are 413 powerlooms in the North-eastern States.

He elaborated that the maximum 400 powerlooms are in Assam, while two are in Manipur, four in Tripura, and six in Mizoram. He revealed that soon four new powerlooms are to be set up in Meghalaya.

Mr. Bharat Chajjer Chairman PDEPC, Mumbai also spoke at the event organized by the Directorate of Commerce and Industries. He stressed on the need for better marketing of handlooms as there has been a significant fall in popularity of these products across India in recent times.

Further, while citing that handlooms have still retained their attraction in Northeast India, he said that the weavers in the region must adapt to the use of powerlooms.

He urged the government to frame policies aimed at increasing the involvement of the youth in the craft, so as to boost the productivity as well as its popularity.

He, however, noted that powerloom operations are not possible in the absence of regular power supply and hence the State governments ought to ensure the same.

O Nabakishore, Principal Secretary of Commerce and Industries, Sericulture stated that the Manipur government intends to set up a textile park at Loitang Khunou spinning mill area.

He stressed on the need to better equip the weavers with powerlooms and revealed that purchase of machines and looms by entrepreneurs and weavers are being subsidised to the extent of 30 percent under the North East Industrial Investment Promotion Policy of the Central Government.
