Bernhard Bart arrived in Sumatra with the intention of learning the language, but instead learned about the textile heritage of the area. He discovered that the traditional art of weaving songket, a sumptuous and intricate supplementary weft technique that had been the hallmark of the area, was disappearing.
Mr. Bart decided to revitalize the craft in particular by preserving the old patterns and by developing methods to make it more economic to weave. He and Indonesian friends founded Studio Songket ErikaRianti with the goal to produce songket shoulder cloths with the patterns as fine and intricate as the old ones. Mr. Bart will present a lecture which will discuss this process as well as the future he envisions for the continuation of this traditional art.
