The Central Silk Board (CSB) has targeted to raise the annual silk production in the country to 32,000 tons by the end of the 12th Five-Year Plan period.

Currently, India produces 21,000 tons of silk annually compared to a demand of 30,000 tons, according to KS Menon, Chief Executive of Silk Mark Organisation of India and Ishita Roy, Member Secretary of CSB.

At present, while the annual rate of increase in silk production in the country is 6 percent, the rate of growth in demand is around 10 percent. Hence, each year, India imports about 7,500 tons of silk and another 4,000 tons of silk fabric from China.

India is the largest consumer of silk in the world and its silk trade is estimated to be around Rs. 70-100 billion annually. With about 400,000 handlooms and 100,000 powerlooms, the silk sector provides employment to about 7 million people in the country.

There are at present six automatic reeling plants and 10 more are expected to be set up over the next five years at a cost of Rs. 25 million each. The CSB would provide a subsidy of Rs. 5 million to each of the new automatic reeling projects.

In 2004, the Silk Mark scheme was launched by the Union Government. The Silk Mark tag provides an assurance to consumers that the particular product is made of 100 percent pure silk. About 12 million Silk Mark labels have been sold so far by the Silk Mark Organisation.

The Silk Mark Organisation has 1,700 members, which includes traders, manufacturers, as well as importers and exporters. Every year, nearly 300 new members are joining the Organisation.
