As the demand for coir products is rising, a national policy on fibre should be put together to facilitate better administration of the industry, Mr. G Balachandran, the new Chairman of the Coir Board, has said.

Speaking after assuming charge as new Chairman of the Board, he said that introduction of latest technology for softening the coir fibre can help in modernizing domestic coir industry, which is confronting severe competition in global market.

Mr. Balachandran, who for long has been a board member, is the first Coir Board member to be elected as its Chairman. Previously, he served as a Vice-Chairman of the Board. He also serves as the Director of Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Development Studies.

The current year would be a year of reinvention of the Coir Board, Mr. Balachandran said and added that coir items should be made more inexpensive and utilizable.

He stressed on the need for organising training programmes and workshops for coir workers and exporters. The Central and the state governments should thoroughly ponder on effective utilization of funds sanctioned for the board.

Better accountability in the system would greatly benefit about 400,000 people belonging to socially and economically backward classes of society, who are engaged in the industry, Mr. Balachandran said.

He added that there is a need to boost production of value-added items like fabrics and bags form from jute and coconut fibres.

He informed that the board, together with the Agriculture Department, is also considering using unused fibre as fertilizer. Production of geo-textile fabrics can take the industry to new heights, he said.

He revealed that the board also proposes to set up a coir museum at the Central Coir Research Institute (CCRI) in Alappuzha.

The board would embark on collection of husk in association with local welfare associations and societies, and would also mobilize the CCRI's mechanized unit.

Besides, the 32 outlets of the Coir Board would also be revamped to draw more customers. Overseas expositions in centres like Delhi and the board's online portal would also help in marketing of coir products at international level, he added.

Part-modernization of conventional looms would also facilitate employment of women, and a mobile servicing system would also be launched for maintenance of such machines, he concluded.
