Executive Director of Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL), Mayank Desai said powerloom sector now has three options to market its products.

Over-and-above jobwork for traders and exports of customised niche products, these small and mid-size mills are supplying to bigger mills that are already utilising their entire capacities.

The powerloom sector is getting a new lease of life. Rising demand, both overseas and domestic, for Indian fabrics and apparel has prodded the sector to pull its act together.

The once largely unorganised sector, is now finding new customers in the organised mill sector and garment exporters. This has prompted these companies to organise themselves into marketing clusters in order to maximise their capacity utilisation.

These orders are based on the requirements of the customers, which include Bombay Dyeing and Arvind Mills among others. These firms in turn supply to overseas retailers like Walmart and JC Penney.

More than 25 firms from Tamil Nadu have evinced interest in supplying fabrics to the organised mill sector and are also expanding their capacities in anticipation of further demand.

Coimbatore-based Dyanopack Fine Clothing Exporters has already begun supplying to Welspun, Bombay Dyeing and Premier Mills, and is looking to expand its capacity from the current 17 looms to 48 looms by the end of the year.

Similarly, Giri Textiles Overseas, based in Erode, is supplying to garment exporters like Elena Creations and Bangalore Textiles. It plans to add an additional 100 looms to the existing 300 it has on a contract basis.
