The Taiwan Textile Research Institute (TTRI), in association with the Ministry of Economic Affairs' (MOEA) Department of Industrial Technology (DoIT), organized two textile and apparel centric events - 2012 Textile International Forum and Exhibition (TIFE 2012) and the third Asian Protective Clothing Conference (APCC) in Taiwan.

The three-day events, held with protection, safety and environmental sustainability as their main theme, were aimed at enhancing cooperation between upstream, downstream and midstream textile firms to promote innovation.

TTRI Chairman Waang Yea-kang said in current times of climate change and global economic slump, it is important for textile firms to focus on production of goods that are environmentally sustainable, protective, comfortable and safe.

He said the main intention behind holding TIFE each year is to provide a platform for continuous knowledge sharing and innovation.

Calling the Taiwanese textile industry as an industry with long standing, DoIT Director Lin Chuan-neng said the industry remains a major contributor to the country’s exports, by continuously upgrading itself through continuous research, innovation and development.

The DoIT Director underscored the importance of textile industry as one of the key industries supporting the Government’s strategies. He informed that evolving new technologies for application in the textile industry is now on MOEA’s priority list.

He said the apparel firms which earlier focused on production of comfortable and healthy goods, are now also considering the safety factors.

DoIT intends to develop a knowledge and experience sharing platform for textile industries of different countries, he added.

With its overall production touching NT$ 500 billion, Taiwan’s textile industry made US$ 12.72 billion in exports during last year. At the same time per kg value of its products reached a record high of NT$ 5.2.
