Leather export pegged at $2.6 bn for 2005-06

Leather exports in the year 2004-05 were $2,379 million and a target of $2,675 million has been set for the year 2005-06, said Dr Elangovan, Executive Director, Council for Leather Exports.
Leather product exports between April and October in 2005-06 had touched $1,430 million in comparison to exports worth $1,357 million during the 2004-05 period said Dr Elangovan, ahead of the leather Research Industry Get-together (LERIG) 2006, an annual event initiated by the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI).
Dr Elangovan informed that the footwear exports this year is expected to grow to 18 per cent by March 2006.
During the current year, footwear exports registered an increase of 15 per cent, valued at $856 million.
Leather goods exports were $569 million and a target of $650 million has been set for this year, he said.
Leather garments registered a slide in exports with exports worth $185 million which was $319 million in the previous year.
The reason for the slump was that India's $50 leather garment segment was penetrated by China's entry into this segment from its low-end $30 segment.
Industry can take heart from the fact that globally, trade in leather garments has declined. This has been because of cheaper alternative of synthetics, available to buyers.
Main theme will be to, re-launch Indian leather products this year, in order to expand exports, said Dr T. Ramasami, Director, CLRI.
Strategy for this would range from inviting large investments for existing capacity expansion and involving domestic market in export segment, said Dr Ramasami.
