Pakistan Readymade Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) has urged the Pakistan Government to expedite implementation of 27 international  conventions necessary to apply for the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) Plus status with the EU, which would allow the country to duty-free exports its goods, including apparels, to the EU.

The GSP Plus status has a potential of drawing substantial foreign exchange to the country, and would result in creation of plenty of new employment opportunities in Pakistan’s textile and garment industry, PRGMEA said.

The association said the time for Pakistan to apply for the GSP Plus status is elapsing fast, and hence there is a need for framing and implementing a consolidated strategy for the country to qualify for the status.

Noting that obtaining GSP Plus status is imperative for sustenance of the country’s economy and industry, the association called on all the industry stakeholders and the provincial governments to work out a joint strategy for speedy implementation of the 27 international conventions.

PRGMEA further added that together with other textile associations, it is willing to support and co-operate with the federal and provincial governments and help them in ensuring implementation of all the 27 international conventions.
