Statistical Department of Singapore released the Retail Sales Index and Catering Trade Index for December 2005. It stated that retail industry registered strong sales increase in December 2005. The catering turnover continued to grow and the increase was mainly contributed by restaurants
Overall retail sales in December 2005 rose by 16.9 percent to November 2005.
Excluding motor vehicles, the index increased by 27.0 percent.
Total retail sales value in December 2005 was estimated at $2,797 million compared to $2,392 million in November 2005.
Most retail sectors reported brisk business in December 2005. The wearing apparel and footwear sector registered the largest sales increase of 57.0 percent compared to November 2005.
Shops selling recreational goods and medical goods & toiletries also reported growths of 45.2 percent and 40.4 percent respectively.
Department stores recorded a higher turnover of 35.5 percent after contracting by 5.9 percent in sale in previous month.
