ITC facilitates spinners visit to assess Senegal cotton

The International Trade Centre (ITC) together with the African Cotton Association (A.C.A.) is organizing a visit of selected spinners to Senegal from 17 to 21 February 2014.

ITC is already collaborating with a number of international cotton traders to bring along some of their clients. ITC believes that this visit will enable spinners to exchange with African cotton producers and ginners and observe the efforts implemented in relation to cotton production and improvement of the fibre quality in Africa.

Senegal has been chosen as it is an excellent example with regard to cotton contamination reduction and quality improvement. In addition, ITC’s partner SODEFITEX, the national cotton company, is ISO 9001 certified.

Moreover, at the end of the visit, ITC will organise a regional roundtable with all major cotton companies from West and Central Africa in Dakar to discuss the potential of developing long-term business relationships between the different stakeholders along the cotton value chain.

This visit forms part of the implementation of the EDF 10 Cotton project, financed by the European Union. In the implementation, ITC is working closely with A.C.A. and other regional organizations such as the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) and the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC) to facilitate the promotion and marketing of cotton from West and Central Africa.

To fulfil this objective, A.C.A and ITC support the development of closer business relationships between African cotton companies, traders and final buyers of African cotton to improve the cotton quality and reduce cotton contamination.
