The COSATU-affiliated Southern African Clothing & Textile Workers’ Union (SACTWU) will commence a series of Matric Winter Schools on Monday. These schools are part of the union’s social responsibility programme, and aims to assist working class matriculant children with extra lessons in some of the more difficult subjects, to help them prepare for successful matric year-end exams.

The Winter Schools have been run nationally every year since its launch in the year 2000, except in 2007 when a national wage strike took place by educators in the country. It typically lasts between 5 and 9 days.

This year, the SACTWU Matric Winter Schools will take place in Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London, Ladysmith, Newcastle and Durban. A total of 642 matriculants are expected to attend, 101% more than the 343 who attended the winter schools last year.

Since inception of this programme in the year 2000, the union has spent R6.8m on this worker support event, as the voluntary contribution to help capacitate the country’s youth.

This year, the winter schools are expanded, specifically to concretise the commitment SACTWU had made last year, to help implement the programmes which South African social partners have agreed to in the New Growth Path (NGP) Youth Employment Accord (YEA) signed on 13 April last year at the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto.
