Textiles & clothing, machinery exports up in April

Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) announces as total trade results as follows:

TRADE IN APRIL 2006
Malaysia's total trade in April 2006 was sustained at a relatively high level of RM85.39 billion, an increase of 8.6 percent from April 2005. Total exports were valued at RM46.3 billion and imports reached RM39.09 billion, registering an increase of 6.3 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively, from a year ago.

Compared with the record high values of exports and imports in March 2006, exports in April were lower by 9.7 percent, while imports declined by 6.2 percent. Based on past trends, Malaysia's exports in March are generally higher than that in April.

A trade surplus of RM7.21 billion was recorded in April 2006, making it the 102nd consecutive month of trade surplus since November 1997.

During the period of January-April 2006, total trade registered a value of RM333.02 billion, an increase of 11.5 percent from the corresponding period in 2005. Exports amounted to RM183.01 billion, an increase of 10.2 percent, while imports were RM150.01 billion, higher by 13.1 percent from the same period of 2005. This resulted in a trade surplus of RM33 billion.

EXPORTS IN APRIL 2006
Lower exports of electrical and electronic products (E&E), liquefied natural gas (LNG), transport equipment, crude petroleum, and optical and scientific equipment resulted in lesser exports in April compared to March 2006. However, textiles and clothing, machinery, appliances and parts recorded an increase in exports in the month of April.

Market which registered significant increases in exports in April 2006 were the United States of America (USA), the People's Republic of China (PRC), Viet Nam and Indonesia.
