Customs and industry have welcomed the release of the Booz Allen Hamilton review of the Integrated Cargo System (ICS).

Chief Executive Officer Michael Carmody met with industry representatives at a Customs National Consultative Committee meeting in Sydney today and told them Customs accepted all the recommendations contained in the review.

The committee recognised a commitment by Mr Carmody that Customs would work together with industry to realise the potential benefit of the ICS for both Customs and industry.

Mr Carmody said Customs would establish a new management structure to oversee future ICS development.

In particular Customs will create an additional Deputy Chief Executive Officer position responsible for delivering the recommendations outlined in the report.

"These initiatives are extensive but full of opportunity for Customs and industry. The report also delivers a number of lessons for Customs that will assist not only in the continuing development of ICS but also in future major systems developments," Mr Carmody said.

He said the review had concluded that despite a difficult implementation and transition period, the focus for the ICS must now be on leveraging the investments made for the future.

"This recommendation is based on the finding that the integrated nature of the ICS and its modern architecture represents a sound base for further improvements.

"Quite clearly a significant proportion of industry experienced problems following the introduction of the imports component of ICS. Customs acknowledges there are things that it could have done to make the implementation smoother.
