Malaysia-New Zealand announces in bilateral meeting as follows:
Background
At the bilateral meeting between the Prime Ministers of Malaysia and New Zealand on 30th March 2005, both leaders agreed to launch bilateral FTA negotiations.
Scope
Areas under the Malaysia-New Zealand FTA include:
trade in goods;
trade in services;
trade remedies;
technical barriers to trade;
economic cooperation.
Status
The First Meeting of the Malaysia-New Zealand Trade Negotiating Committee (TNC) was held on 16-17 May 2005 in Kuala Lumpur. Discussions focused on the approach, scope, structure and schedule of the FTA.
The Second TNC was held from 4-6 July 2005 in Wellington. This meeting discussed the approach and modalities for liberalisation of trade in goods, services and investment, and cooperation activities to facilitate and promote trade.
The Third TNC in Kuala Lumpur from 14-16 September 2005 and the Fourth TNC in Wellington from 19-21 October 2005 progressed work by discussing draft chapters in the areas of goods, services, investment and cooperation activities.
In addition, modalities for the liberalisation of goods, technical barriers to trade, SPS measures, intellectual property rights and capacity building activities were also discussed.
The Fifth TNC in Kuala Lumpur from 21-25 November 2005 further progressed discussions on tariff elimination modality, intellectual property rights and areas for cooperation.
