Australian Customs Service (ACS) announces that a 34-year-old Australian man will appear in a Sydney court charged with importing drugs internally and within each of his shoes.

Customs officers at Sydney International Airport selected the passenger for a baggage examination when he arrived on a flight from Tanzania via Dubai yesterday morning (25 June).

During the examination, officers allegedly became suspicious that he may have been carrying drugs.

An x-ray of his shoes revealed anomalies consistent with that of a concealment.

On closer examination of the shoes, officers noticed a white powder which allegedly tested positive for cocaine. It was later established that each shoe contained approximately 100 grams of cocaine.

The passenger was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) who arrested the man and escorted him to St George Hospital for a medical examination.

The medical examination revealed a number of items in his stomach.

It will be alleged in court the man had swallowed 15 pellets containing cocaine.

The man was charged with attempting to import a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug, namely cocaine, contrary to section 307.2 of the Criminal Code Act 1995.

He will appear in Sydney Central Local Court this morning.

The maximum penalty for drug smuggling is a fine of $825,000 and/or life imprisonment.
