No longer the fierce warriors or headhunters of yesteryear, the peoples of Sarawak nevertheless still retain many of their ancient beliefs and live in harmony with their environment. Situated in the South China Sea on the third largest island in the world, Sarawak is home to 27 different ethnic groups and over 8,000 species of flora and 20,000 species of fauna.

Many of the tribal groups in Sarawak continue their communal egalitarian way of living. Relying on nature for their nutrition, medicine, dyes, and materials for household items, these tribes remain in touch with nature and connected to the secrets of the forest.

Omens from the birds guide their daily lives. Dreams that come from special spirits inspire the powerful motifs that are woven into ceremonial cloths and tattooed on throats and wrists, giving the wearer special status.

This is a rare and truly special opportunity to meet a group of the foremost contemporary practitioners of these ancient arts. Musicians and artisans from Sarawak, located on the exotic and remote island of Borneo, will perform ceremonial dances, play on the traditional string instrument known as a “sapeh”, and demonstrate the magnificent ikat weaving for which Borneo is world renown. Edric Ong, President of Society Atelier Sarawak, will present a slide show and video of Sarawak.
