Survey conducted by Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) among foreign buyers to identify the problems facing the handicraft industry has highlighted poor designs and lack of product promotion as their two major hindrances.
Hoang Van Dung, Vice-Chairman of VCCI, informed that designs based on individual contracts from foreign buyers constitute 90 percent of export and lack their own creativity in absence of any incentive.
He stressed the need of product diversification coupled with better trade promotion to compete in the world market.
Handicraft industry received earning of US $500 million last year with the prediction of $1.5 billion by 2010.
Major export market of Vietnamese handicraft is the US and EU.
