Cumulative growth for period April-July 2006 stands at 10.6%

The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of July 2006 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

The General Index stands at 233.9, which is 12.4 percent higher as compared to the level in the month of July 2005. The cumulative growth for the period April-July 2006 stands at 10.6 percent over the corresponding period of the pervious year.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of July 2006 stand at 153.4, 248.8, and 200.4 respectively, with the corresponding growth rates of 6.0 percent, 13.3 percent and 8.6 percent as compared to July 2005.

The cumulative growth during April-July, 2006-07 over the corresponding period of 2005-06 in the three sectors have been 4.0 percent, 11.8 percent and 6.1 percent respectively, which moved the overall growth in the General Index at 10.6 percent.

In terms of industries, as many as fifteen (15) out of the seventeen (17) industry groups (as per 2-digit NIC-1987) have shown positive growth during the month of July 2006 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The industry group 'Food Products' has shown the highest growth of 26.8 percent, followed by 25.0 percent in 'Wool, Silk and Man-made Fibre Textiles' and 22.4 percent in 'Transport Equipment and Parts'. On the other hand, the industry group 'Leather and Leather & Fur Products' have shown a negative growth of 7.2 percent followed by 5.1 percent in 'Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre Textiles (except cotton)'.
