The Export Promotion Council of India and the handloom and textiles department introduced series of measures for the development of exports in handloom industry of Tiruvannamalai district.
Initiative was taken by selecting 35 women weavers from self help groups (SHGs) and hosting seminar at Tiruvannamalai.
This seminar would give exposure to participants on handloom varieties, colour and design preferences of possible overseas buyers and technology that will help them to weave these varieties.
After this, participants would be taken to Karur, where they would visit prominent handloom units and then team would depart to Chennimalai, another handloom export hub.
The handloom department is also giving training to 280 women weavers under the scheme of Rashtriya Sam Vikas Yojana.
Although 40 percent of the people of the district earn from handloom industry, district is backward due to dogmatic attitude and backward nature of the industries.
