LCCI seeks technical help from USAID for cotton & tex industry

The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged the USAID to extend help for avoidance of post harvest losses, value addition of agriculture products, development of long staple and high yielding cotton seed, construction industry, transport and communications and technical & vocational training.
The LCCI President Shahid Hassan Sheikh, Senior Vice President Yaqoob Tahir Izhar and Vice President Mubasher Sheikh were talking to Ms Amy Myer, Director Economic Growth, USAID and Mr. Aazar Bhindara Economic Growth Coordinator, Pakistan, at LCCI.
The LCCI office-bearers lauded the assistance being provided by USAID in Milk & Dairy, Gems & Jewelry and Marble & Granite sectors. They said that under these initiatives, Competitiveness Support Fund with US$ 20 million funding was established. Pakistan's Gem and Jewelry industry was repositioned in the international market.
Critical linkages were developed with international training institutes. A model Hallmarking centre (Certification of Quality) in Lahore to introduce Hallmarking practices in Pakistan, Pakistan Dairy Development Company, an initiative from the dairy strategy and Pakistan Stone Development Company were established.
The LCCI Office-bearers said that Punjab is the major contributor to Pakistan's economy. It produces 80 percent of wheat, 58 percent of rice, 64 percent of sugarcane and 75 percent of cotton of Pakistan. Punjab has a large number of industrial units. The small and cottage industries are in abundance. There are 39,033 small and cottage industrial units. The number of textile units is 11,820.
