The Chemical Industries Association (CIA) - the voice of chemical businesses in the UK - has published the chemical industry's latest performance figures for sustainable development.

The report, The Chemistry of Sustainability, shows the chemical industry continuing to take responsibility for its social and environmental impact, underpinned by an ongoing drive towards productivity improvement.

To date over three quarters of CIA members have now fully signed up to the CIA's Sustainable Development programme, while others have published their own commitments that either match or exceed the collective industry initiative.

Industry is on target in its work towards meeting tough environmental, health and safety goals that exceed many other parts of the wider economy.

Despite global challenges and more local problems, such as energy prices, productivity has risen by 5.5 percent over the year. Companies performed well in employment with over 90 percent of businesses having robust processes and policies in place to ensure participation, equality and employability.

Announcing the publication of the report, which features case studies of chemical companies, Chief Executive of the CIA, Steve Elliott said.
