Cotton planting in the Western Zone is delayed due to heavy rainfall still going on. Farmers are waiting for the water to dry up, because certain cotton growing areas situated in lowlands are waterlogged.
However, as majority of areas planted with cotton crop lie in highlands, these areas were not affected by floods.
Production of cotton crop in earlier seasons was low owing to drought conditions, but rains could bring a good harvest this year according to Jones Bwahama, Zonal Director of Tanzania Cotton Board (TCB).
He added that there are expectations that the Western Zone will harvest 400 million kilograms of crop this season due to favourable climate.
During this planting season, 19,421 tons of cotton seeds were distributed by TCB in the zone. This figure has exceeded TCB's target of 15,000 tons for all zone areas like Kigoma, Mara, Mwanza, Shinyanga etc.
