Cluster Development approach is considered as an effective approach for inducing competitiveness in the industry by ensuring inter-firm cooperation based on networking and trust.

Due to geographical proximity of units and homogeneity of products, development interventions can be made for a large number of units and simultaneously leading to higher gains at lower cost of implementation.

This was stated by Shri Mahabir Prasad, Union Minister for Small Scale Industries & Agro and Rural Industries, while addressing the Parliamentary Consultative Committee Meeting attached to his ministry.

He said that industrial cluster occupied the driver's seat for propelling economic activities in micro & small enterprises sector.

Detailed study of the features of the clusters with due care and application were essential prerequisites for selection of a cluster of the right type, the Minister added. The criteria may vary to some extent depending on the type of clusters and the goals sought to be achieved through the cluster development initiatives.

Shri Prasad also outlined the programmes and achievements under Prime Minsiter's Rozgar Yojana (PMRY). Some of the Members suggested that more and more clusters should be set up in various parts of the country, especially in the South.

Assuring the Members, the Minister said that while selecting the clusters, an all India perspective would be kept in mind. Dr.Chandrapal, Secretary, SSI & ARI, Smt. Kumud Joshi, Chairperson, KVIC and Shri A.C. Jose, Chairman, Coir Board also spoke on this occasion.
