Retail sales growth remains firm

Underlying growth in retail sales volume remains firm, driven by growth in non-food stores, according to statistics released by the Office for National Statistics. The sales volume in the three months April to June was 1.1 per cent higher than in the previous three months, the same rate of growth as in the three months to May.

Three-monthly growth in sales volume was 1.9 per cent for non-food stores while sales volume decreased by 0.1 per cent for food stores. The highest three-monthly growth was for 'other non-food stores' (which includes sports and leisure stores and jewellers) at 3.3 per cent.

Sales volume for non-specialised stores (which includes department stores) increased by 2.5 per cent, the highest growth for this sector since May 2006. Sales volume for non-store retailing increased by 1.8 per cent, the lowest growth for this sector since April 2006.

Total sales volume in the three months to June 2007 was 3.8 per cent higher than the same period a year ago. Sales volume for food stores was 1.3 per cent higher than a year ago, the lowest increase for this sector since June 1999.

Total sales volume increased by 0.2 per cent between May and June. Increases were reported in all sectors except for food stores, where sales volume decreased by 1.1 per cent (the largest monthly fall in this sector since August 2006) and non-store retailing, where sales fell by 1.5 per cent.

The largest increase occurred in non-specialised stores, where sales volume grew by 4.1 per cent, the highest for this sector since January 2005.

The unadjusted value of retail sales for the three months to June was 4.4 per cent higher than in the same period a year earlier. The average weekly value of sales in June was £5.0 billion, 3.8 per cent higher than in June 2006.

Sales by non-food stores increased by 5.2 per cent over the year, compared with 1.9 per cent for food stores and 7.5 per cent for non-store retailing. Sales by non-specialised stores increased by 7.5 per cent over the year, the highest growth for this sector since April 2006.
